Yahtzee yawns over MGS4

sillytuna on June 26th, 2008

, the fastest speaking presenter since that rather bizarre French bloke on Rapido, has posted his review of Solid Snake’s latest adventures in Metal Gear Solid 4. I’d love to give my take on the game but I have a pathological hatred of games with lengthy cut scenes and piecemeal gameplay. Actually I wouldn’t know about the gameplay because I’d rather stick my head in an overused tube station toilet than sit through 20 minutes of cut scenes before I get to do anything.

It’s fair to say that I’m probably not best placed to judge this game but it seems to keep one of the Tuna team busy and if he thought the game sucked then he’d say so. Several times. He hasn’t (yet), so it must be pretty damn good.

More seriously, narrative within games is a huge talking point these days and is something I will no doubt discuss in a future post. MGS obviously does something right in this regard, despite Yahtzee’s reservations.

  1. meh. Ridiculously long cut scenes. Ridiculously complicated controls. If you have Ridiculously large amounts of patience, get your next MGS fix now.. !

    otherwise .. GTA FTW ; ]

  2. I have a certain curiousity about MGS4. I mean, it is so ridiculous, so
over-the-top and absurd, that I am kind of intrigued despite knowing
I’d probably hate it. But in a way I just have to respect the sheer
balls of the dude for being so self-indulgent. I’m sure the story is
shit and all, but I guess Kojima’s approach is unique if nothing else.

I mean, long cut-scenes are crap. That’s been common knowledge for at least a decade.

But NINETY MINUTE cut scenes are just frothingly insane, and I’ll always have a degree of sympathy for anyone willing to go that far off the deep end. It’s no longer just boring cut scenes. It is the absolute pinnacle of boring cut scenes. It’s an EVENT. Never again will we see dribbling madness of this magnitude.

That has to count for something.

  3. Apparently, solid snake has no “appendage” (Ed: Censored due to SarahQ’s biology lesson).
